I Found Myself in a Dark Place & the Way I Got Out Was by Reaching Out

With all that’s going on at the moment, it can be easy to find yourself in a dark place. However often, it’s the simplest thing we can do which is the most powerful. And we often forget that reaching out to family and friends can do wonders.

I teach a variety of techniques for managing stress, from neuroplastics to somatics and beyond. But to quote a friend and colleague of mine @jessicaencellcoleman, “the magic of human connection is one of the simplest and most powerful things we can do to feel better”.

The act of reaching out to someone isn’t even about having your problem solved. It’s about being acknowledged, heard, seen and loved.

In fact, human beings are neurologically and physiologically evolved for this. Steve Porges’ Polyvagal Theory describes that we literally need interaction with our fellow tribe members to regulate our own mood and behavior.

So, the next time you are in a tough place, stressed out, anxious, angry, or scared, see what happens when you skip the meditating and/or medicating and just meet up with a friend or loved one. It may make all the difference in the world, not to mention, they might need some love too. 👫
